Wedding DJ at The Gambrel at Hillis Acres Berkshire, NY

A large barn over two floors, with the ceremony held up in a field a genuine distance away. Downstairs is where the day happens: cocktail hour, dinner, and an open floor with room to dance. The walk up to the ceremony is the thing worth planning for, because it is longer than it looks from the car park.

Knowing the Room

What I know about this room

A DJ walking into a room for the first time spends the first hour learning it. Where power is, how the ceremony space carries sound, where the booth can sit without blocking a sightline, how long load-in actually takes when the parking is full.

None of that is difficult. It is just time, and on a wedding day time is the one thing nobody has spare. Having worked Hillis Acres before means that hour is already spent, and it was spent on a day that was not yours.

I arrive two and a half to three hours early regardless. At a venue I already know, that margin goes toward testing and detail rather than orientation.

The ceremony is a real walk, and your guests should be told

The ceremony field sits a fair way from the barn. Getting my gear up there is a cart and a couple of trips, which is my problem rather than yours. The part that is yours is the hundred-odd people making the same walk in shoes chosen for photographs. Put it in the details you send out, so anyone who needs to plan around it can. Grass, a distance, and no warning is how you end up with someone sitting out the ceremony.

That walk costs more timeline than you would guess

Guests move at the pace of the slowest person in the group, in both directions, and a hundred people take longer to gather at one end of a field than to sit down in a room. Build real minutes in for it rather than the optimistic number, and the ceremony starts when it is supposed to. This is the single most common place a wedding here would run behind.

The upstairs is out of sight from the booth

The barn has two floors and everything that matters happens on the first: cocktail hour, dinner, the dance floor. At the wedding I worked, the photo booth went upstairs, directly above me and completely out of my line of sight. Worth knowing if you are putting anything up there. I cannot see who has drifted off the floor, so announcements have to be made assuming half the room is somewhere I am not looking.

Questions worth asking about any Finger Lakes venue

These come up at nearly every winery and lakeside property in the region, and the answers shape your timeline more than most couples expect.

Does the venue have a sound limit or a curfew?

Many Finger Lakes properties do, particularly for outdoor ceremonies and receptions near residences. The number matters less than knowing it early. If music has to come down at a set time, the emotional arc of the night gets built to peak before that point rather than being cut off at it. Ask your venue for the specific decibel limit, where it is measured, and whether indoor and outdoor limits differ.

Is the ceremony in a different space than the reception?

Yes, and further than at most venues. The ceremony is up in a field a real distance from the barn, and the reception is inside on the first floor. That means a separate sound setup outdoors, a walk each way for your guests, and more minutes in the timeline than the distance suggests. All of it is straightforward once it is planned and it is the main thing I would settle early here.

Who is coordinating the day?

Some couples hire a planner, some hire a day-of coordinator, some rely on venue staff, and some have none of the above. All four are workable. Put me in touch with whoever is involved and I deal with them directly rather than through you. Where there is no coordinator, the reception timeline is mine to run so that role does not quietly become yours.

Can you work with the venue's in-house sound system?

Yes. I am comfortable working inside house systems or alongside a venue's AV team, and I bring a full professional setup with backup cabling and equipment as standard. Whichever the venue prefers, the integration is worked out before the day.

Do you charge extra to travel here?

No. I have worked this venue, so getting there is already part of the number I give you rather than a line added afterwards. Travel for venues further afield, including destination weddings, is worked out per event when we talk.
