Wedding DJ at Aster Estates Skaneateles, NY

The ceremony is outside on grass, off to the right as you come in past the large parking lot, and the reception tent sits just past it. The short distance between the two is the useful part here. It is also a white tent, which does more with light than most rooms I work in.

Knowing the Room

What I know about this room

A DJ walking into a room for the first time spends the first hour learning it. Where power is, how the ceremony space carries sound, where the booth can sit without blocking a sightline, how long load-in actually takes when the parking is full.

None of that is difficult. It is just time, and on a wedding day time is the one thing nobody has spare. Having worked Aster Estates before means that hour is already spent, and it was spent on a day that was not yours.

I arrive two and a half to three hours early regardless. At a venue I already know, that margin goes toward testing and detail rather than orientation.

The ceremony and the tent are a short walk apart

You come in past a large parking lot and the ceremony area is on grass immediately off to the right. The tent is just past it. Plenty of properties in this region put those two spaces far enough apart to need a real transition window and a plan for walking guests between them. This one does not. The main system goes in the tent, the ceremony is covered separately outside, and the move between the two is short.

White canvas is a better surface for light than most walls

The lit totems and the moving heads on top of them are part of the standard setup, and color reads off a white tent in a way it does not off dark barn wood or a patterned ballroom wall. The venue’s own string lights stay warm underneath it. If uplighting is a maybe for you, this is the kind of room where it earns the money rather than disappearing into the background.

A tent is not a building, and I have worked a lot of them

Canvas does not reflect sound the way four walls do, power usually comes from somewhere other than a socket behind the booth, and weather belongs in the plan rather than in a footnote. Tented receptions are common across the Finger Lakes and I have run a good many of them, including Firelight Camps, the John Joseph Inn, the Fontainebleu Inn, Seneca Ridge and Lourdes Camp. Aster Estates is familiar ground rather than a first go at one.

A Wedding Here
“Steven was extremely easy to work with. He totally understood what John and I were hoping for on the dance floor! He had a great trick to get everyone on the dance floor, too!”

Planning a wedding at Aster Estates

Questions worth asking about any Finger Lakes venue

These come up at nearly every winery and lakeside property in the region, and the answers shape your timeline more than most couples expect.

Does the venue have a sound limit or a curfew?

Many Finger Lakes properties do, particularly for outdoor ceremonies and receptions near residences. The number matters less than knowing it early. If music has to come down at a set time, the emotional arc of the night gets built to peak before that point rather than being cut off at it. Ask your venue for the specific decibel limit, where it is measured, and whether indoor and outdoor limits differ.

Is the ceremony in a different space than the reception?

Yes, though barely. The ceremony is outside on the grass and the reception is under the tent a short walk past it. That does mean a separate setup for the ceremony, because the main system lives in the tent, but the transition is short and guests are not being walked across a property to get there.

Who is coordinating the day?

Some couples hire a planner, some hire a day-of coordinator, some rely on venue staff, and some have none of the above. All four are workable. Put me in touch with whoever is involved and I deal with them directly rather than through you. Where there is no coordinator, the reception timeline is mine to run so that role does not quietly become yours.

Can you work with the venue's in-house sound system?

Yes. I am comfortable working inside house systems or alongside a venue's AV team, and I bring a full professional setup with backup cabling and equipment as standard. Whichever the venue prefers, the integration is worked out before the day.

Do you charge extra to travel here?

No. I have worked this venue, so getting there is already part of the number I give you rather than a line added afterwards. Travel for venues further afield, including destination weddings, is worked out per event when we talk.
