Not all of it.
Most weekends I am at a wedding. The rest of the time I am hosting karaoke at a casino, running a school dance for five hundred teenagers, or working a crowd of two thousand outdoors in February. Those nights ask for different things, and doing them is a large part of why the weddings go the way they do.
What does not change
No over-talking. No overwhelming volume. No one-size-fits-all playlists.
Every room tells you what it wants if you are watching. I would rather read it as the night goes than arrive with a plan I am determined to finish, and when there is a choice between what would be fun for me and what the room actually needs, the room wins.
A casino crowd, a plunge in February and a gym full of sixteen year olds want completely different things. What they have in common is that none of them care how good my equipment is. They care whether the night felt like something.

Karaoke
I host one of these every week at a casino and have the regulars to show for it. Real microphones, a system you can actually hear yourself over, and nobody called out to a room they did not agree to stand in front of. Works for corporate nights, big birthdays, rehearsal dinners and the hour after a wedding ends.

Proms, homecomings and the large outdoor productions. Students can tell within two songs whether you respect them or are humoring them, and the clean versions are not negotiable. Everything else is the same gear and the same preparation I bring to a wedding.

Two thousand people at the Rochester and Buffalo Polar Plunges for Special Olympics, standing outside in the cold. A weekly karaoke night at del Lago that I built from nothing. University events at Ithaca College and Cornell. None of those are weddings and all of them made me better at weddings, because every one of them put me in front of a crowd that owed me nothing.
