What a wedding DJ costs in the Finger Lakes
Most wedding vendors will not put a number on a page. Here is mine, what drives it, and what actually separates one quote from another so you can compare them properly.

Five things account for most of the variation between one wedding quote and another.
Hours of coverage
A ceremony, cocktail hour, and full reception is a longer day than a reception alone. Coverage is the single biggest variable in any quote, and it is worth confirming exactly which hours a number covers before you compare two of them.
How many spaces need sound
A ceremony in one location and a reception in another means two setups, not one. Cocktail hour in a third space means a third. Each one is equipment, time, and a transition that has to be planned.
Whether the MC role is included
Some quotes cover music and treat announcements as an extra. Introductions, program transitions, and every microphone moment are part of what I do, not a line item. This is the most common place two quotes differ without saying so.
Lighting and production add-ons
Uplighting and basic lighting packages change the look of a room considerably and are quoted separately so you can decide whether they are worth it for your venue. A ballroom and a tented field have very different needs here.
Travel and date
Standard travel extends 180 miles from the Finger Lakes with no fee. Peak spring and fall Saturdays are the dates that fill first, which affects availability more than price.
Two quotes at the same price are rarely the same service
If you are holding two numbers that look similar, these are the questions that reveal the difference. Ask both DJs the same ones.
Which hours does this actually cover?
Ask for start and end times in writing. A four-hour quote and a seven-hour quote can look similar once add-ons are counted, and overtime rates vary widely.
Who is the DJ on my date?
At multi-DJ companies the person you meet is not always the person who shows up. Ask whether your DJ is named in the contract.
How many planning conversations are included?
One call before the wedding and three are very different services. Ask what happens between booking and the day, and what tool you will use to organize music and timeline.
What happens if the timeline slips?
Every wedding runs late somewhere. Ask who decides what moves. If the answer involves consulting you during your reception, that is a cost you pay in attention rather than dollars.
Is the setup insured, and is there backup gear?
Most venues require a certificate of insurance. Redundant cabling and backup equipment should be standard, not an upgrade. Ask directly.
Will you coordinate with my other vendors?
Ask whether the DJ contacts your photographer, caterer, and venue in advance, or whether that relaying falls to you in the final week.
Common questions about cost
Why do wedding DJ prices vary so much?
Because the job varies so much. At the lower end you are usually paying for someone to play music for a set number of hours. Higher up you are paying for planning time, MC work, redundant equipment, insurance, vendor coordination, and the judgment to run a reception when the timeline moves. Those are genuinely different services that share a job title, which is why comparing on price alone is difficult.
Is a more expensive DJ actually better?
Not automatically. Price correlates with experience and scope more reliably than with skill. What you should look for is specificity: a DJ who can tell you exactly what happens between booking and your wedding day, exactly who will be there, and exactly how decisions get made when something runs late.
How much of the budget should go to entertainment?
Rather than a percentage, work backwards from how much of your reception depends on it. If a full dance floor and a well-run timeline matter to you, entertainment is doing more work at your wedding than most line items. If you are planning a short, conversation-forward evening, it reasonably costs less.

Dates are confirmed with a signed agreement. All wedding and corporate inquiries are coordinated through my booking partner, Washburn Entertainment, and the specifics of deposits and payment schedule are covered in that agreement.
Do you charge for travel?
Not within 180 miles of the Finger Lakes region. Destination events beyond that range are accepted, with travel arranged on a per-event basis.
